The Meanings of Colours

Considering my project revolves around personality types based on colour, I think it could be useful to look into the commonly understood meanings of each colour.



Red Meanings

  • Associated with fire, violence and warfare

  • Also associated with love and passion

  • Historically been associated with both the Devil and Cupid

  • Can have a physical effect on people: raising blood pressure and respiration rates, and metabolism

  • Associated with importance (red carpets)

  • Associated with danger (sirens)

  • Draws attention, radiates strong and powerful energy


Orange Meanings

  • Vibrant, energetic, enthusiastic, youthful

  • Muted tones can be associated with Autumn, meaning it can be associated with change and movement

  • Strongly associated with creativity

  • Because of the fruit, it can be associated with health and vitality

  • In design, it commands attention without being as overpowering as red and often considered more friendly and less in-your-face

  • Adds spontaneity and positivity to life

  • Encourages social communication


Yellow Meanings

  • Considered the most and most energising of the warm colours

  • Associated with happiness and sunshine

  • Can also be associated with deceit and cowardice

  • Associated with hope (some countries wear yellow ribbons when their loved ones are at war

  • Can be associated with danger, though not as strongly as red

  • In design, it lends a sense of happiness, cheerfulness, optimism

  • Inspires thought and curiosity


Green Meanings

  • Down-to-earth colour

  • Can represent new beginnings and growth

  • Signifies renewal and abundance

  • Green can also represent envy or jealousy

  • Can represent a lack of experience

  • Some of the calmness of blue but has energising energy of yellow

  • In design, green can have a balancing and harmonising effect

  • Appropriate for designs related to wealth, stability, renewal, and nature

  • Provides a little bit of luck


Blue Meanings

  • Associated with sadness

  • Also represents calmness and responsibility

  • Colour of trust and loyalty

  • Light blues can be refreshing and friendly, dark blues more strong and reliable

  • Blue is also representative of peace

  • In design, the shade of blue will have a big impact on how the designs are perceived

  • Light blues are relaxed and calming, bright blues are energising and refreshing, dark blues are good for corporate designs where strength and reliability are important

  • Dislikes confrontation and too much attention but it is honest, reliable and responsible


Purple Meanings

  • In ancient times, the dyes to create purple were extracted from snails and were very expensive so only royals and wealthy people could afford them

  • It is also associated with creativity, spirituality and imagination

  • Dark purple us associated with wealth and royalty, while lighter purples are more romantic

  • In design, dark purple gives a sense of luxury, and light purples are associated with Spring and romance

  • Inspires us to indulge in our innermost thoughts and encourages spiritual growth

  • Symbolises mystery


Pink Meanings

  • Signifies love and compassion

  • Kind and comforting

  • Full of sympathy and compassion

  • Friendly, playful, calming and nurturing

  • Joyful and warm

  • Feminine and intuitive
